Intro to Traditional Ayurvedic Walking Massage
What: Learn a routine for Traditional Ayurvedic walking massage. There will be a short demo at the beginning of the class, and then we will proceed to trade massages, roughly 30 minutes each, there will also be a short intro to Marma points(energy points).

Who: Anyone interested in learning a new style of massage to minimize stress and promote a healthy body, no experience in massage or bodywork required. Those who practice yoga, massage or alternative therapies this may be a great complement to your practice.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda or “science of life” translated, is the traditional medicine of India. The Vedic teachings from India convey there is a physical and a subtle body of man. The physical makes up the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, the subtle is the life force(prana) to energize the physical body.
Prana is a positive life force of the Vata dosha, also called “wind of life,” it is a source of energetic health. Ayurveda works with prana by stabilizing and balancing its functioning through the 3 doshas(Vata, Pitta, Kapha).
Marma massage, yoga asanas, and pranayama are all practices to benefit the balance of prana in the body. These therapies all work to increase and regulate pranic function through the nadis(channels) of energy in the subtle body. The purpose of this is to awaken the healing power of the body. Practicing techniques to further the awareness of the subtle body complements the physical practice of yoga asana and other energy therapies.
What is Marma Therapy?
Marmas are pressure points that are sensitive/ vulnerable zones in the body. They can be theorized as energy wells connected by a meridian system of nadis to the organs, cells and all parts of the body. They can be considered more physical than the chakras(energy centers). It is important to understand these marma points are vulnerable, a strong blow can cause injury and mild touch can be healing. If one maintains a healthy, active flow of Prana overall health is attained. However if there is an interruption or blockage, one risks illness. Massage is applied in a circular clockwise direction to tonify and strengthen and a circular counterclockwise to reduce excess to the marma points.
The Ayurvedic text, “Sushruta Samhita” goes into detail of 107 marma points in the body. These points are not fixed, but may adapt and differ to the individual. A marma therapist overtime develops sensitivity to find prana blockages per individual. The different traditions and geographical regions in India may have different approaches and locations of Marma points. There are major marma points relating more to the chakras and a number of minor points outwards in the limbs that may not be classified under the 107. There will be a brief introduction to a few marma points each class incorporated into the walking massage.
Why Walking Massage?
If one is physically or mentally stressed it is difficult to meditate or practice yoga asana, this walking massage is a supportive practice to overcome these obstacles. In the structure it is taught, after a few classes it can be used as a practice at home. This traditional ayurvedic walking massage allows the practitioner to apply pressure more efficiently with body weight. The compressions stimulate the energy system(prana), address bone alignment, relaxes muscles and is good to practice to culture before one’s home yoga asana practice.
**Clients should wear loose comfortable clothes, the receiver of the massage will be fully dressed. The receiver will be lying on a mat/blanket on the floor and the giver will use their feet and hands to apply controlled pressure.
